I'm currently contemplating a fairly underwhelming couple of characters. I suppose I've done the whole 100+ point characters to death. So I entertained the notion that maybe Bhaalspawn are a little larger than life, but not necessarily that much larger.
I calculated the average total stat score for the original 30 NPCs, which is 80.03 for those characters. I also counted the 5 temporary party members you get during training in Candlekeep, but the average would be 79.84 without them, so it's kinda marginal. I'm gonna put it at 80. I guess that's roughly what an average adventurer in Faerun gets dealt according to BG.
I actively avoided counting the EE characters. Their average total stat score was roughly 85. Even the lowest ranking of them, Neera, seems to be actively designed to excel stat-wise. Which is fine, I've done it to plenty of my characters as well, but they just seem to be a little bit more unbalanced compaired to the original batch of NPCs. Noticeably, none of them have a single-digit ability score as well, whereas 21 of the original 30 NPCs have that. So there.
Now, to be a little cheesy, I'm gonna simulate some divine heritage by adding one point to each stat, kinda like the "Gifted" trait from Fallout. It's a Bhaalspawn. They should generally be a tad better adventurer material than the other NPCs. At least in theory. So I'd get 86 points to distribute. 22 points from the maximum score of a standard Human, and at least 10-15 point from the superior characters with total scores approaching 100. And the character is still outscored by a couple of NPCs, of which one is Sister Dearest and the other is The Daft Boy Scout.
A Halfling Fighter/Thief would look something like this:
12
19
14
11
12
18
I've allowed myself 2 max. stat scores, and the rest somewhere in the middle. Dexterity as a Thief, and Charisma since I'm the Bhaalspawn. Yup. I'm pulling the strings. Like it's meant to be. I suppose I could have made a dump stat of one stat, but I can't really make up my mind. But still, not exactly someone whose been force-fed Super Soldier Serum.
Thoughts?
